How LASIK Works
LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) reshapes the cornea using a precision excimer laser, correcting how light focuses on the retina. The procedure typically takes under 15 minutes per eye and is performed with only numbing eye drops.
Are You a Candidate?
You may be a good candidate if you:
- Are 18 or older with stable vision for at least 12 months
- Have a cornea thick enough to allow safe tissue removal
- Fall within the correctable prescription range
- Have no significant dry eye syndrome
- Are free of corneal scarring or active eye disease
A thorough pre-op evaluation measures:
- Corneal topography and thickness
- Pupil size in low light
- Tear film quality
- Overall eye health
The Day of Surgery
- Numbing drops are applied to each eye
- A thin flap is created in the corneal surface (using a laser or microkeratome)
- The flap is lifted and the excimer laser removes precise amounts of corneal tissue
- The flap is repositioned — it bonds naturally without stitches
- You’re done in under 15 minutes per eye
Recovery Timeline
| Timeframe | What to Expect |
|---|---|
| First 4–6 hours | Mild discomfort, blurry vision — rest is recommended |
| Day 1 | Most patients see clearly enough to drive |
| 1 week | Return to most normal activities |
| 1 month | Vision stabilizes; final prescription confirmed |
| 3–6 months | Complete healing; results are permanent |
Expected Results
Over 95% of LASIK patients achieve 20/20 vision or better. The vast majority eliminate or dramatically reduce their dependence on glasses and contacts.
